Sometimes you have things to do that you need to have your hands free, but you still need to be taking your baby with you as you move along. Or maybe you don't mind carrying your baby, but your arms just get too tired trying to do it for as long as you need to on a given day. Enter the world of
baby carriers. Designed to help hold your newborn against your body and allow you greater freedom of movement, these are one of the best ways to be on the go with your baby in tow!
As a safety note, please remember that any baby carrier is for assistance in carrying your baby around with you.
Baby carriers are not intended for holding infants in a motor vehicle and should not be used in place of a car seat! You'll also want to be sure that you're using a carrier that is rated to safely hold your baby's weight.
That having been said, most have adjustable straps for added comfort. Some
basic baby carriers have a zippered design to easily secure your baby in the carrier. There's often a pocket on the front of the basic baby carrier for storing items you'll need frequently, and an absorbent bib to help protect your clothing. Usually a basic baby carrier is rated for newborns, so it's meant for a range of up to 20 lbs.
The more
deluxe baby carriers have an open-sided design to make it easier to secure baby into the carrier. You can carry a newborn baby facing in or your growing baby facing out. Again, they often have an elasticized pocket on the baby carrier that provides for convenient storage and an absorbent bib helps to protect your clothing. Since these types of carriers are designed to include carrying older infants, their weight ranges go a little bit higher, perhaps 26 lbs or so.
